An organic electroluminescent element which comprises one pair of electrodes and, pinched between the electrodes, at least one layer containing at least one novel hydrocarbon compound having an anthracene ring and a fluorene ring which are directly bonded with each other. Said compound can be suitably used for preparing an organic electroluminescent element being excellent in luminous efficiency and having a long luminous life.
