The invention relates to a membrane reactor for the production of highly pure hydrogen from a hydrocarbon stream and steam, comprising a diffusion membrane, permeable to hydrogen and optionally a catalyst for the conversion of hydrocarbons to hydrogen and separation of the hydrogen gas from the remaining gases. The membrane and optionally the reactor are equipped with means for heating. The invention further relates to a method for the production of highly pure hydrogen gas with a pre-treatment step.
