The lock mechanism comprises a sliding assembly (10) which moves lengthwise in an aperture in an inner panel (9) of the door or window (2) between locked and unlocked positions. It is equipped with an actuating element (12) and two catches (14,15) to engage with the edges of the aperture. Each of the catches interacts with an outer plate (3) covering an edge of the aperture in the door or window panel and forming an integral part of the sliding lock assembly. The catches and plates interact through a system of tenons and apertures.
