The device has several braking devices (7.1,7.2) movable transversely with respect to the sheet transport direction, sheet guide elements covering the gaps between adjacent braking devices and each consisting of a band of flexible material (8.1). The length of the band transverse with respect to the sheet transport direction and in plan view is adaptable to the distance between adjacent braking devices.
