The spinning machine (10), and especially a ring spinner, has at least one drive (12) with a frequency setter or converter (20) as the control which is set by a central machine control unit (28). The frequency setter/converter controls the drive in both rotary directions through at least one control input (29,30). The drive control for a ring spinner sets the rotary direction of the drive through the control inputs by changing at least one parameter of the frequency setter, which has two separate control inputs for the rotary directions. The control inputs are selected as required, especially through a relay (31). A freewheeling diode (33) is switched in parallel to the relay coil (32). The relay is tripped through a digital output (11) at the central machine control unit. The relay has a contact (13), which alternates between the two control inputs at the frequency setter, and preferably in the release line (15). The direction of drive rotation is set by an operating unit (42) at the central control, according to given parameter data. The central control gives the drive an intermediate stop phase on a change of rotary direction, and a change of drive direction is indicated by a signal or display by the central control. Further spinning machine drives (14,16) are controlled locally by frequency setters (24,26). At least a part of the additional frequency setters uses a common intermediate circuit for a direct voltage supply from the leading drive and frequency setter. The central control is connected to the intermediate circuit through a DC/DC converter. The drive control can rotate the spindle clockwise and anti-clockwise. The drive at a sliver drawing unit is moved into reverse by one or two steps, after a spinner stoppage, until the end of the drawing cylinder at the drive side is set back by a given angle.
