Flat objects (7), which are individually retained and serially placed one on top of the other in a stack in a stacking device (2), are used to produce a crossed stack (12). The placed objects (7) undergo one of two sequences of steps in alternating groups (11, 11'). In said sequences of steps the object s are alternately released groupwise from the retaining transporter and at eas t one of the groups (11, 11') in the form of a leaf is transported to the stacking device lying on a transport bed (10.1, 10'.1) and between the alternating groups (11, 11') a rotational difference of 180~ about a perpendicular to the object surfaces is introduced. The objects (7) position ed groupwise in the stacking device form a crossed stack (12) without the stacking device or parts thereof having to be rotated between the positionin g of object groups. A reduction in cycle time and moving parts is thus made. T he stacking is particularly suitable for the production of crossed stacks (12) of rectangular or square, folded, printed products.
