A remedy for diseases caused by degeneration of central or peripheral nervous system, comprising a 1,2-ethanediol derivative represented by the following general formula or its salt: wherein R<1> represents a substituted or unsubstituted phenyl, naphthyl, indanyl, indenyl, tetrahydronaphthyl or heterocyclic group; R<2> represents a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a hydroxyl-protecting group; R<3> represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; nR<4>'s may be the same as or different from one another and each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; nR<5>'s may be the same as or different from one another and each represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group; R<6> represents a substituted or unsubstituted amino or nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group or an ammonio group; and n represents 0 or an integer of 1 to 6.
