The invention relates to a method for determining the state of a nitrogen oxide (NOx) storage catalyst (12') on an internal combustion engine (1), whereby, during a storage phase (E) in which nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by the internal combustion engine are stored in the NOx storage catalyst (12'), a nitrogen oxide (NOx) feed mass flow (msnovk) before the NOx storage catalyst (12') and a NOx mass flow (msnonk) after the NOx storage catalyst (12') are determined. The state of the NOx storage catalyst is (12') thus calculated from the both determined values (msnovk, msnonk) for the NOx feed mass stream before and the NOx mass stream after the NOx storage catalyst (12').
