PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To back up or restore data stored in a volume of an open system exceeding capacity recognizable by a main frame by using backup software on the main frame. SOLUTION: The volume 502 of an open system which is to be backed up is divided into a plurality of areas which can be recognized by the main frame and the respective areas are allocated to logical volumes 501 for the main frame. Pieces of management information to be required when the areas are accessed from the main frame are created corresponding to the respective divided areas and set in main frame management information logical volumes 503. Mapping processing 505 is executed to the main frame so that the divided areas and pieces of the management information corresponding to them appear as a single volume. The backup software on the main frame performs the backup/restoration by every logical frames 501 of the main frame.
