PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multiple-winding variable reluctance resolver and a resolver failure detection circuit capable of easily detecting a failure. SOLUTION: This variable reluctance resolver is provided with plural output windings 17X1, 17X2 and 18Y1, 18Y2 wound around a stator for outputting an X-component and a Y-component according to the rotation of a rotor 12, respectively. This circuit is provided with an abnormality detection means for detecting the abnormality of the variable reluctance resolver, a conversion means for converting the output of the output windings into a digital signal, a control means for monitoring the state of the abnormality detection means, and an output winding selection means for selecting and transmitting the outputs of the output windings. The control means selects a normal winding combination out of the plural output windings by the output winding selection means according to the output of the abnormality detection means and connects it to the conversion means.
