PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent wear of a metal ring assembly due to an inclination of a metal element without an increase in the machining cost of the metal element. SOLUTION: A metal belt 15 for a continuously variable transmission comprises a multitude of metal elements 32 united with an endless metal ring assembly 31, and transmits driving force when wrapped round between a driving pulley and a driven pulley. A retainer 44 made of a radially deformable endless springy member is disposed between ear portion bottom surfaces 38U of ring slots 35 in the metal elements 32 and the radially outer circumference of the metal ring assembly 31. When the metal elements 32 are inclined forward near the outgoing point of the driven pulley, the buffer action that the retainer 44 produces when radially deformed can prevent a strong interference of the metal ring assembly 31 with the ear portion bottom surfaces 38U and saddle surfaces 38L to thus prevent wear, of the metal belt 15 and improve the durability thereof.
