PURPOSE: A data communication unit of a radio terminal using infrared rays and a method thereof are provided to enable data communication with other terminals or equipments without an additional speech path by adding infrared communication function to the radio terminal. CONSTITUTION: It is determined whether a user selects an infrared communication mode or data requesting infrared communication exists in the received infrared data(300). An ID for executing authentication for mutual infrared communication is transmitted or received(310). It is confirmed whether ID is transmitted or received(320). Transmitting data by infrared communication is selected for transmitting transmitting data information, and transmitted data information is confirmed(330). Confirmed data is transmitted or received(340). It is confirmed whether a program connected with the received or transmitted data exists(350). The corresponding program is operated(360). If data-requesting termination of an infrared communication mode is generated, the infrared communication is terminated(370).
