PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the overall diameter of a hydraulic shock absorber while ensuring a magnitude adjustment of the spring force of a suspension spring interposed in the hydraulic shock absorber. SOLUTION: A spring force adjusting structure is so designed that a supply and discharge of pressure oil from an external pressure oil supply and discharge source P to and from an annular pressure charier R formed between an annular housing 11 fixed to the periphery of a cylinder 1 and an annular piston 12 housed inside the annular housing 11 moves the annular piston 12 into and out of the annular housing 11. A locking member 14 for fixing the annular housing 11 to the periphery of the cylinder 1 is connectedly retained on a bottom piece 4 that closes the bottom end of the cylinder 1 with a sealing structure. The bottom piece 4 is fixed to the inner circumference of the bottom end of the cylinder when the bottom end of the cylinder 1 is caulked.
