A broach tool 2 comprises a very stiff backing member 4 carrying a broach bar 14 with cutting points 16 within a milled trench 12 on a flat surface 10, the stiff backing member 4 is formed integrally with a conical arbor 6 which is dimensioned to be received into a standard size hollow spindle, on the base of the arbor there is formed a flange portion 20 which is provided with a circumferential groove 21 adapted to be engaged by the grasp of an automatic tool change mechanism so that the tool 6 may therefore be stored in a multi-tool carousel or store permitting the broaching operation to be carried out as part of a multi-task, multi-tool sequence of operations. In use high pressure coolant is delivered through the machine spindle and into a passageway (28, figure 3 ) within the arbor 6 and into the trench 12 and out through further passages (33, figure 2) in the vicinity of the broach cutting tips (32, figure 2). |
