PURPOSE: A method for controlling a switching element of a washing machine is provided to minimize the surge of a current generated when a relay contact point is on by operating a relay at an intended time band, thereby preventing the malfunction or damage of a triac behind the relay. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling a switching element of a washing machine includes the steps of sensing the magnitude of DC power rectified by a rectifier by a DC power sensing part when driving the washing machine(ST100), generating switching element control signals at different time points according to the magnitude of the sensed DC power(ST200), and turning on the switching element at a zero-crossing point of the DC power supply source according to the switching control signals(ST300).
