PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To adjust the contact-free downward traveling of a web material of different web traveling width in a first longitudinal folding device by a simple means with the minimum loss of compressed air. SOLUTION: In this device for guiding the web material in a contact-free manner via one surface 2, a first longitudinal fold is formed in the web material along the surface 2, the width of the surface 2 is continuously reduced from an upper transverse girder 5 to a lower transverse girder 19, and an orifice for the gaseous medium is provided in the surface 2 and a side limiting part 1, and the volume of the gaseous medium flowing out of an air cushion below the web material is variable by an abutting closing element 3 with reference to the web width of the web material to be carried via the surface 2.
