PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the operating speed, simplify the wiring design in mounting, increase the number of connected PHYs and suppress contention between transmission cells and reception cells so as to effectively utilize the band in cell transmission where an ATM switch and PHYs(Physical layers) are connected. SOLUTION: The ATM switch 1 and the PHYs 2-4 are connected side by side by using loop transmission lines 7-11 to transmit cells and control data for cell transmission reception control. The ATM switch 1 monitors cell transmission/reception signal from the PHYs 2-4 to decide to/from which of the PHYs 2-4 the cell transmission/reception is made, the control data generated on the basis of this decision are added to cells and transmitted to the 1st stage PHY 2. The ATM switch 1 receives the cells and the control data from the PHY 4 at the final stage to perform cell switching.
