PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably discriminate the kind of various recording media while securing the compatibility with established tape streamer drives. SOLUTION: Medium discrimination information is added as a management information of a tape-like information recording medium stored in an MIC, and the reader tape part of the tape-like information recording medium is provided with an information discriminating mark showing the kind of tape-like information recording medium. The medium discrimination information is read from the MIC and the discrimination of the cassette is performed on the basis of the medium discrimination information. When the cassette can not be discriminated by the medium discrimination information, the information discriminating mark is detected from the reader tape part of the tape-like information recording medium to discriminate the cassette on the basis of the information discriminating mark.
