PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device capable of preventing the damage of a display part more surely and its luminance controlling method. SOLUTION: A temperature difference estimation value Td is obtained by a temperature difference estimating device 4 while using a temperature estimation value Te expressing the temperature of the peripheral part of the display screen of a PDP(plasma display panel) 11 which is outputted from a video signal VS and a reference value To expressing the temperature of peripheral part of the panel of the PDP which is outputted from a panel peripheral part- temperature setting device 5 and the luminance of a picture to be displayed on a display part 1 is controlled by a controller 3 and a brightness controller 2 in accordance with this temperature difference estimation value Td.
