Image display/composition having detection unit copying preceding inter type without residue pixel group or movement compensating using preceding converted image

The colour image digital format conversion method has a unit (6) detecting if their is a residue. If the group of pixels is of type inter without residue, then the group of pixels is copied (8,10) from the preceding image (11) taking account of the vector movement. If the vector movement is null (7) conversion is effected by compensation of movement in the preceding converted image.
