PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high output and excellent C/N characteristics while making surface properties of a magnetic layer favorable and dealing with the trend toward the shorter wavelength. SOLUTION: The centerline mean roughness (Ra1) of the surface of the magnetic layer 2 is specified to be 3.0-4.0 nm and P2m <=P1m×100.5 is specified to be satisfied when the maximum value in >=0.1μm and <1.0μm power and the maximum value in >=1.0μm and <10.0μm power of a power spectrum obtained by Fourier transforming the surface shape of the magnetic layer 2 are defined as P1m and P2m, respectively. The centerline mean roughness (Ra2) of the surface of a non-magnetic substrate 1 is preferably specified to be 2.0-3.0 nm and P2b<=P1b is preferably specified to be satisfied when the maximum value in >=0.1μm and <1.0μm power and the maximum value in >=1.0μm and <10.0μm power of a power spectrum obtained by Fourier transforming the surface shape of the non-magnetic substrate 1 are defined as P1b, and P2b, respectively.
