A method for the hydrometallurgical treatment of spent batteries comprises successive stages consisting of: (i) simultaneously grinding, in a wet medium, the batteries, (ii) wet screening to separate a fine part containing the nickel, the cobalt and other elements, (iii) subjecting this fine part to a chemical attack by an oxidising acid, (iv) subjecting the final solution from the chemical attack to a compounding operation to form a nickel and cobalt compounds and (v) precipitating of the nickel and cobalt from their respective compounds.
