PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a yoke type MR head capable of enhancing especially insulation reliability between a MR element and a yoke, about a method for manufacturing the MR thin film magnetic head. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the MR head provided with a yoke 13 for inducing an external magnetic field to a magnetoresistive effect element 12 and a yoke gap 19 and having the magnetoresistive effect element 12 disposed at the yoke gap part and electrodes 17 for making current flow to the magnetoresistive effect element, at both end parts of the magnetoresistive effect element, has a stage for forming a non-magnetic insulating film 15A on a magnetoresistive effect film 12A before the magnetoresistive effect film 12A is patterned in a prescribed shape and a stage for patterning simultaneously the non-magnetic insulating film and the magnetoresistive effect film in a prescribed element shape.
