PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve such a problem that one character cannot precisely be separated when a contact and an overlap occur in a plurality of written characters and the multiple delimiting candidate points of one character exist and it takes much processing time in the case of a complicated character such as KANJI (Chinese character) in the other method. SOLUTION: The device is provided with a delimiting position extracting means obtaining coordinate point string data from an input character pattern by an input means, permitting the overlap of the projection of coordinate point string data on an x-axis and extracting a delimiting position and a delimiting position detecting means obtaining the appropriate delimiting position by detecting the position obtained by the delimiting position extracting means by considering writing lapse time, a rectangular shape, and the like, for example. Thus, the appropriate delimiting position is obtained even if the overlap of strokes exists.
