PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the amount of data to be stored in a timing generator with built-in memory for generating a timing pulse to be used for driving a solid-state image pickup element, and to provide the flexible function of this timing generator. SOLUTION: A time series data memory 33 stores data expressing the repeat pattern of a logic level concerning multi-phase pulses V1-V4 for vertical transfer gate drive, a control value expressing the length of a period from a certain pulse change point to the next pulse change point is stored in a first ROM 41, the number of pulse logic changes within one cycle is stored in a second ROM 51, and the desired number of repeat cycles is stored in a third ROM 61 respectively. The pulses V1-V4 are provided on the basis of multiplex count operation using these ROM data. By switching the control values read out of the respective ROM 41, 51 and 61 under address control, the mixture of an ordinary transfer mode and a vertical high speed transfer mode within one vertical scanning period is dealt with.
