METHOD AND DEVICE FOR CORRECTING DEFECT OF DIGITAL IMAGE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automated method for correcting a digital scanned image having a fold or similar artifact. SOLUTION: A comparatively long and narrow defect in the digital image is corrected by identifying a slender block to be corrected and automatically calculating a pixel color/shading value within the block to be corrected from peripheral pixel values close to the slender block. A computer automatically generates a couple of the pixel coordinates of paired parallel lines comprising the confronted long sides of a rectangle and a line segment running between the long sides and pixels inside the rectangle are painted out by interpolating the color values along with the respective line segments. The map of pixels to be painted out and not to be painted out while executing such a method is maintained and an additional step is executed for assigning a value based on the average of all adjacent pixels to all the pixels, which are not painted out.
