PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a tatami mat which is substituted for a thick tatami mat and can cope with various thicknesses by combining a thickness adjusting material and a tatami mat face material. SOLUTION: According to the method for forming the tatami mat, expanded polystyrene is sliced so as to have a tongued and grooved body with a height of 1 to 5 cm and a width of 1 to 6 cm, and paper, nonwoven fabric, etc., are stuck to a tongued and grooved surface of the body as height adjusting materials, followed by laying the thin tatami mat face material. Thus, the amount of waste generated when the tatami mat is disposed of can be reduced. Further, by filling an absorbent in tongued and grooved portions, harmful substances and odors can be absorbed.
