PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve disturbance of waveform of damping force at the time of transition to a compression stroke by restraining sudden pressure reduction of oil liquid during elongation stroke and by eliminating a possible cause of occurrence of cavitation. SOLUTION: A bottomed trunk-formed cup-shaped member 22 is installed fixedly by using a coupling nut 15 on one end of a piston rod 21. The cup- shaped member 22 is arranged to surround a damping force development mechanism from an outer peripheral side, with trunk part 22B being made open upward toward a piston 4 side. Thereby a first throttle passage 23 through which flows the high pressure oil liquid after having passed a disc valve 10 during the elongation phase of the piston rod 21 is formed between the cup-shaped member 22 and a piston retainer 9. Further, a second throttle passage 24 through which flows the oil liquid after having passed the first throttle passage 23 is formed between an inner cylinder 3 and the cup-shaped member 22. Still further, a third throttle passage 25 through which flows the oil liquid after having passed the second throttle passage 24 is formed between the inner cylinder 3 and the coupling nut 15.
