PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detector for trolley wire support system which can detect the obstacle to a trolley wire support system by using only one stylus. SOLUTION: This obstacle detector is provided with a stylus which is supported by its intermediate section, so that the tracer oscillates according to the advance of a vehicle, while the vertical movement of the tracer is controlled when the front end side of the tracer comes into collision with an obstacle; and a sliding plate which slides against the energizing force of a spring according to the oscillation of the stylus, when the rear part of the stylus from the intermediate section comes into contact with the plate according to the larger oscillation of the stylus than prescribed oscillation, when the stylus oscillates, is returned to its original reference position by the energizing force of the spring, and a slit made through the sliding plate. The detector is also provided with an optical sensor composed of a light-projecting system, which projects light through the slit and a light-receiving system, which receives the projected light. The light projected through the slit is intercepted according to the sliding motion of the sliding plate, and the detector obtains a detect signal having the pulse width, corresponding to the intercepted time of the light from the optical sensor.
