PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a magnetic recording medium, suitable for a magnetic tape for DVC and DVC-LP capable of reducing the wear of a magnetic head, brought by the running of the tape, and prolonging the life of the magnetic head. SOLUTION: In the polyester film for the magnetic recording medium, a coating film containing fine particles and an organic compound is formed on one side surface of the polyester film. Fine surface protrusions of the fine particles exist on a surface A of the coating film and the fine particles have 10-50 nm particle diameters. And the surface A has 3,000,000-90,000,000 fine surface protrusions/mm2 and the fine particles are exposed from the surface A of the coating film by <=d/2 (nm) height (wherein d denotes the particle diameter (nm) of the fine particle).
