PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read the images of both sides of a manuscript with only one read ing sensor by removing a reversal path for inverting surface of a manuscript. SOLUTION: When a manuscript D is carried by first carriage roller 51 which rotates positively in the arrow direction, a reading sensor 11 reads the image of a bottom Dd of the manuscript. When a second manuscript sensor 42 detects an end Db of the manuscript, the rotation of the first carriage roller 51 and the second carriage roller 52 is once stopped, and the reading sensor 11 rotates 180 deg. together with a rotating carriage path 12, and then stops. When the manuscript D is carried in the reverse direction by the reverse rotation of the first carriage roller 51 and the second carriage roller 52, this time the reading sensor 11 in a position of reading the image of the topside DC of the manuscript reads the image of a topside Dc. When the reading of the image is finished, the reading sensor 11 rotates again to the position in Fig. 1.
