PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heating furnace in which cracks of rollers are not transferred onto the surface of a steel belt for cold-forming a pipe or no scale buildup is generated thereon even if the steel belt passes through the furnace and the method of operating the same. SOLUTION: The heating furnace comprises a cylindrical furnace chamber equipped with heating and cooling means for heating and cooling the interior atmosphere to high and normal temperatures, respectively, and high-temperature rollers arranged in series in the furnace chamber at intervals in the longitudinal direction thereof for transferring a metal belt with the surfaces thereof kept horizontal. The heating furnace further comprises low-temperature rollers provided in the space above the aforementioned high temperature rollers, which watch and wait outside the furnace wall when the interior of the furnace is at a high temperature and which are inserted into the furnace through the wall thereof at a normal temperature, and a metal belt elevating means for pushing up the metal belt being transferred on the high-temperature rollers as high as a position for the insertion of the low-temperature rollers before they are inserted.
