Skin ulcers are treated by applying a topical composition containing a therapeutically effective amount of photosensitizing dye to the skin ulcer, allowing the topical composition to remain on the skin ulcer, thereby permitting the skin ulcer to absorb a therapeutic amount of photosensitizing dye, then irradiating the topical composition with light from a light source emitting at least one wavelength corresponding to an absorption band of the photosensitizing dye for a time sufficient to deliver a therapeutic dose of light energy to the photosensitizing dye. The topical composition is a gel, cream, ointment, solution, liposome, spray, or aerosol containing a photosensitizing dye. |
