A method for preparing a polarization element (10), characterized in that it comprises forming an undercoat film (12) on a transparent (glass) substrate (11), applying a dispersion liquid containing a metal on the undercoat film (12), heating the dispersion liquid containing a metal to thereby reduce a noble metal ion in the dispersion liquid and form a film (13) containing met al particles (14) dispersed therein. The metal particles (14) are localized in the vicinity of an interface surface (16) between the undercoat film (12) an d the film (13) having metal particles, by their action with the undercoat fil m (12). The polarization element exhibits good adhesion between the films form ed as mentioned above and can be formed as an element having a large area.
