The invention relates to the use of tetrahydro thiopyran-4-ols of the general formula I: wherein n is a whole number from 0 to 2 and R represents a straight-chained or branched alkyl, alkenyl or alkinyl group with between 2 and 6 C-atoms or an optionally substituted phenyl radical, as active ingredients for the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases of the central nervous system and for producing medicaments relevant to the CNS. Some of the compounds of the general formula (I) are novel, for others, the medical indication is novel. The invention also relates to methods for producing compounds of the general formula (I) and to medicaments containing at least one of these compounds.
