Directly producing an abrasion resistant open die forming tool comprises preparing a tool based on soft metal to contour an open die surface corresponding to the computer model; and dynamically cold gas spraying the contoured surface to form butt welding metal particle layers consisting of a thermal lower layer made of copper and at least one outer abrasion resistant layer made of tool steel. An Independent claim is also included for a tool used for rapid prototyping. Preferred Features: The soft metal is Cu, Al or Zn, preferably aluminum or aluminum alloy. The lower layer has a thickness of 3-10 mm and the outer layer has a thickness of 5-15 mm. The metal particles for the thermal lower layer are made of copper and copper alloys. The abrasion resistant metal particles are made of tool steel compositions.
