A variable drive mechanism for bicycle comprising a pair of input torque crank arms supported for independent rotation about a first axis and operatively connected to an output torque member rotating about a second axis. The rotary angular location of the two axes is adjustable and lockable in order to provide smoother pedaling motion or to eliminate the top dead center as is preferred with mountain bikes. With this drive mechanism, a constant speed of the output member will provide the input crank arm with a single variation of speed per revolution. Compactness, light weight, and reliability are achieved through innovative design and geometry of components.
