<p>A method of producing a salt of general formula (I) wherein A is α-OH or β-OH, B is α-H or β-H, C is H, α-OH or β-OH, or B and C together form a double bond, D is -H, α-OH or β-OH, E is H, α-OH or β-OH, Q is S or O, X is an alkali metal (e.g. sodium or potassium) or an ammonium ion, n is 0 or 1 and m is 1 to 8. The method involves reacting (a) a bile acid derivative of the general formula (II): wherein A, B, C, D, E, Q, n and m are as defined above and each of X' and X'' is -H, an alkali metal or an ammonium ion, provided that at least one of X' and X'' is an alkali metal or an ammonium ion; with (b) an alkali of the formula X-OH, where X is as defined above, so as to produce said salt of the formula (I), and purifying the resultant mixture using reverse phase chromatography so as to isolate said compound of the formula (I).</p> |
