<p>Automated processing of incoming data packages such as e-mail messages in a manner specified by the recipient includes processing conditional (i) upon characteristics of the sender or recipients of the packages wherein the characteristics at retrieved from directories storing data representing such parties, (ii) upon the schedule of delivery of such packages, (iii) upon time relative to an event, (iv) upon a recipient-specified state, and (v) upon the recipient's schedule. Directories storing data representing characteristics of the sender and/or recipients can be accessible according to the X.500 Standard or lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP). Times relative to an event include time before or since such events as attempted delivery of the data package, expiration of the data package, and notification of the recipient. The recipient specifies state variables and specific values for those variables. Examples include boolean state variables for 'on vacation' and 'traveling on business'. In addition, the recipient's schedule is accessed to determine the recipient scheduled state (e.g., free or in a meeting) and data packages can be processed accordingly.</p> |
