<p>A clay gelling agent produces an aqueous alkaline anode gel (3) with suspended metal particulate. The combination of clay with other non-clay gelling agents can produce a superior gelled anode, suitable for use in alkaline electrochemical cells. Furthermore, the addition of at least one starch gelling agent to a clay-based anode gel, a carboxyvinyl-based (i.e. CARBOPOL) anode gel, or a carboxymethylcellulose anode gel can produce a battery with improved stability when the cell is dropped, otherwise shaken, or exposed to heat. The present gelling agents can also be used to gel electrolyte solutions that do not contain suspended metal particles.</p> |
