The buffer has a number of compartments (110) to hold plastics cards (100), a supply mechanism (140) to place and align a card into each compartment and a dispensing mechanism (150) to dispense the cards from the compartments. A continuous transport unit (10) carries the compartments and moves them between the supply and dispensing mechanisms. Preferably, the supply and dispensing mechanisms are on the same half of the transport unit.
