This invention relates to an acidic detergent composition containing an acidic protease which retains proteolytic activity in the presence of an inhibitor selected from the group consisting of pepstatin, PEFABLOC, PMSF and EDTA, and at least one nonionic surfactant. The invention further provides methods for cleaning or washing a hard surface or laundry by contacting the hard surface or laundry with the detergent composition dissolved in an aqueous solution in an amount sufficient for providing a cleaning effect.
