The steering assembly has a gearing, sensor unit (9) and drive pinion (2) acting upon a gear rack (3) and installed between the gearing and sensor unit. The gearing and sensor unit are freely rotatable around the axis of the drive pinion. The drive pinion at one end has an extension which has a smaller diameter than the drive pinion itself for assembly purposes. The gearing includes a worm (4) driven by an electric motor which acts via a wormwheel (5) upon the extension of the drive pinion.
