A rock bit insert 13 made of a cermet (e.g. cemented WC) has a wear resistant coating formed by making a conformable mixture of one or more powders selected from cermets, carbides, borides, nitrides, carbonitrides and refractory metals with an applying agent (e.g. a polymer binder), conforming and applying the mixture onto a surface of the insert 13 and sintering the mixture by pressurising it at elevated temperature (e.g. pressed omnidirectionally at a pressure in the range 10-120 ksi, at a temperature in the range 1000-1500{C). The mixture may be applied to the insert in the form of a slurry or a green body shaped to complement the surface of the insert 13, which may be curved. There may be at least one intermediate layer present between the insert 13 and the wear resistant coating. The insert 13 may be in either in presintered or fully densified form when the mixture is applied. |
