PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating rod which is almost free from the irregularities of a coating film thickness and is of a good coating quality. SOLUTION: A protuberant strip 12 spirally formed around a columnar outer peripheral part of the rod 10 has the tip (outer peripheral area) with a cylindrical area formed in parallel with the axial center, a single pitch P1 being set within the range of 0.1 mm<=P1<=3.0 mm. The recessed part 18 between the protuberant strips 12 is of such a shape that in the section in parallel with the axial center including the axial center (in such a state as shown in Fig. 1 (b)), a parallel part 14 is in parallel with the axial center and a pair of curved parts 16 are smoothly curved to the outside from both ends of the parallel part 14 and are connected to the protuberant strip 12. The curvature radius R1 of the curved part 16 is set within the range of 0.1P1<=R1<=0.5P1 and the length L of the parallel part 14 is set within the range of 0<L<0.8P1.
