PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which is capable of efficiently cleaning soil contaminated with hardly volatile organic matter at a low cost. SOLUTION: The soil contaminated with hardly volatile organic matter is cleaned by a soil grain size regulating process step of regulating the grain size of the soil in such a manner that the fine-grain soil S1 of <=100 μm in grain size is included therein at 5 to 40 wt.% based on the dry soil and a separating process step of settling the coarse-grain soil S2 exceeding the grain size 100 μm at the bottom of a separating vessel 1 by supplying the soil subjected to the grain size regulation and the water into the separating vessel 1 and adequately fluidizing the soil and separating and removing the hardly volatile organic matter together with the fine-grain soil S1 by floating the hardly volatile organic matter and the fine-grain soil S1 near the inside water surface of the separating vessel 1.
