PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new terphenyl compound preferably having a useful chiral liquid crystal property. SOLUTION: This terpenyl compound is represented by the general formula (1) (R1 and R2 are each the same or different and selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkyloxy, alkenyl, alkenyloxy, alkynyl, alkynyloxy, alkylthio, alkenylthio and alkynylthio groups and the like; and Z is selected from H and F based on each terphenyl carbon independently). An example of the general formula (1) is 1,2-(S)-dimethoxy-(4"-octyloxyterphenyl-4-oxy)butane.
