PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method for forming wood wherein a compression depth of a pattern and a limit of a curvature can be improved, a decorative property is excellent, a crack on a surface of a material and therein, peeling off and splitting in a fiber direction can be reduced, and a stabilized quality can be achieved at a mass production level. SOLUTION: A pressure vessel 1 wherein steam of a specific pressure is fed inside; a pair of press tools (7 and 8) which are oppositely arranged inside the pressure vessel 1 and have an irregular pattern to be transferred to wood material 10a; and a driving means 2 wherein the press tools (7 and 8) are operated to compress the wood material 10a and the irregular pattern is transferred onto the wood material 10a, are provided. A pair of the press tools (7 and 8) have respectively the irregular pattern of a mutual reversal shape wherein the depressed part of one side press tool and the projecting part of the other side press tool overlap almost each other.
