Process for preparing crystalline citalopram base and purified salts of citalopram

The present invention relates to the crystalline base of the well-known antidepressant citalopram, 1-[3- (dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-5- isobenzofurancarbonitrile, to formulations of the said base, to a process for preparing purified salts of citalopram and the hydrobromide using the base, to the salts obtained in this process and to formulations comprising such salts.
