PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a light-load state, without having to add high-precision components and the like. SOLUTION: In an efficient and practicable system (100) and a method, that determine the light-load state of a switching DC-DC regulator, the light-load state is determined, by detecting a zero-tolerance voltage that depends on a load, monitoring a voltage of a switch node (108). This occurs, when the value obtained by deducting half the amount of the switching current at the switch node from the average output current is smaller than zero or equal to zero.
